Chinese Government Condemns America of ‘Contradictory Stances’ Regarding Trade Levy Warning

Donald Trump’s newest ultimatum to enforce an further full import duty on Chinese goods has been called a “classic case” of US double standards, according to the China’s leadership.

A Commerce Ministry spokesperson additionally remarked that China could enact its own undisclosed “countermeasures” if the American leader follows through on his warning, adding that the country was “unafraid” of a potential trade conflict.

On Friday, Donald Trump retaliated at China’s decision to tighten its regulations for foreign shipments of rare earths, alleging China of “adopting a confrontational stance” and attempting to hold the world “captive”.

Additionally, he threatened to withdraw from a scheduled meeting with China’s President Xi, which was set for a summit in Seoul later this month.

Trump’s comments on last Friday shook financial markets, with the S&P 500 closing down 2.7%, marking its biggest drop since April.

The president’s words renewed concerns of a trade conflict between the United States and China.

Earlier this year, the respective governments had reached an agreement to remove high import duties on each other’s products, which had created the possibility of trade halting between the two countries.

As a result, American import duties on Chinese imports subject to an added import tax compared with the beginning of 2025, while US goods entering the Chinese market face a 10% tariff.

Beijing’s recent statements – released by the Commerce Ministry in the manner of written responses to journalist’s questions – echoed language from the zenith of the latest commercial tensions.

Officials denounced US export restrictions on chips and semi-conductors while defending the country’s own restrictions on exports on rare earth minerals as “normal actions” to safeguard domestic safety and that of every country.

The official said that for “an extended period”, the United States had “expanded the interpretation” of domestic safety, misused foreign shipment regulations and “implemented” unfair treatments against Beijing.

“Turning to” tariff threats is not the correct approach to engage with China,” their representative commented.

“Beijing’s stance” on a import duty dispute has remained consistent: we are not seeking one, but we are fearless of one.”

The previous week, China declared it was reinforcing foreign shipment restrictions on rare earth minerals and additional substances critical for advanced tech manufacturing.

This move was regarded as a significant step, as the country processes about 90% of the planet’s critical minerals, which are utilized in products such as solar panels and smartphones.

Latest statements from Washington and Beijing are being viewed by observers as a means of enhancing bargaining power ahead of future trade talks.

Remains uncertain whether a meeting between Donald Trump and President Xi, expected at a high-level meeting in the Republic of Korea before month’s end, will go ahead.
