Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages leading to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey commented. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
