Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
