Significant Web Disruption Impacts Dozens Websites and Mobile Apps

A widespread web outage has disrupted numerous online platforms and apps worldwide, and users noting troubles connecting to the web following issues at the web hosting system.

The disrupted platforms include the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, along with several Amazon-managed platforms including its main retail site and the Ring security home security firm.

In the UK, Lloyds bank was affected as well as its branches the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, while there were also reports of issues using the HM Revenue and Customs online portal on the start of the week. Also in the UK, many Ring customers turned to networks to report their doorbells were not working.

Just within Britain, accounts of problems on particular platforms ran into the tens of thousands for each platform.

Amazon reported that the outage started in the eastern region of the United States at Amazon Web Services, a section that provides crucial internet backbone for many firms, who lease resources on the company's servers. Amazon Web Services is the most extensive online services platform.

Just after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (8 in the morning BST), officials reported “higher problem frequencies and delays” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the Atlantic seaboard of the US. The widespread consequence seemed to disrupt platforms worldwide, and the Downdetector site indicating outages with the corresponding services in multiple continents.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a platform that monitors web disruptions, also reported a rise in outages on Monday morning, with many of them located in the Virginia area, the site of the AWS US-East-1 zone where AWS said the outage started.
