Taliban Authorities and Pakistan Claim Multiple Fatalities in Fresh Border Fighting

Frontier Conflict Escalate
Pakistani Armed Forces and Taliban Government Accuse Each Other of Starting Attacks in Afghanistan's Frontier Region of Spin Boldak

New hostilities erupted along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier early on Wednesday morning, with each side blaming the opposing side of initiating lethal confrontations.

The Pakistani military stated that its forces had killed "15-20 Afghan Taliban" and wounded numerous others in the Spin Boldak district frontier area.

A Afghan authorities spokesman claimed that twelve non-combatants had been fatally struck and over a hundred injured by Pakistani firing. He added that numerous Pakistani soldiers had been killed. None of the reported deaths could be independently confirmed.

Hostilities between the neighbors has flared since blasts rocked Afghanistan last week, which Kabul blamed on Pakistan. The Taliban deny allegations that it is harboring militants targeting Pakistan.

Online Platforms and Armed Confrontations

The two sides are not only battling for the upper hand on the border, but also on digital platforms, trying to convince the public that their faction is causing greater losses.

The latest clashes come after intense border confrontations over the weekend, when the Taliban claimed to have killed fifty-eight members of the Pakistani military and Pakistan reported it neutralized two hundred "Taliban and linked terrorists". The reported casualty figures provided by both parties could not be independently verified.

A few days of unstable calm that had lasted since the weekend were broken on Wednesday.

Local Reports and Impact

Footage purportedly of the fighting and its aftermath have been circulated on the internet and on messaging groups, including images claiming to be of those killed and blurry shots from night vision cameras claiming to be of guard positions demolished. These videos have not been verified.

A source in the border area in Afghanistan reported that fighting broke out at around 4 a.m. local time (23:30 GMT on Tuesday). Another resident in the district, who lives about a short distance away from the frontier post, reported that "intense clashes continued for almost several hours".

"We observed unmanned aircraft and fighter planes flying over us, a number of our relatives are injured," they said.

A medical professional in one of the hospitals in Spin Boldak stated that he tallied "seven bodies and thirty-six injured transported to the hospital", including males, females and minors.

The situation were "tense" and additional casualties were being taken to medical care, he noted.

Evacuations and International Reactions

A local Taliban official in Spin Boldak announced that "hundreds of households have been forced to flee since the previous evening due to the heavy clashes". He mentioned they were on "high alert" after a few military positions were attacked by Pakistani jets. He further indicated that they had the remains of 2 armed forces members.

In a separate night-time clash on Pakistan's western frontier, the Islamabad's forces said that twenty-five to thirty militant and local insurgent fighters were "believed" to have been eliminated.

The clashes have led to calls for reduced tensions from other countries including Beijing and Russia, as well as a suggestion from US President Donald Trump that he could intervene to facilitate a ceasefire.

On that day, Richard Bennett, United Nations representative on the situation of civil liberties in Afghanistan, wrote on a social media platform that he was "very worried" by reports of civilian casualties and evacuations because of the clashes.

"I call on everyone involved to practice the utmost caution, safeguard non-combatants, and abide by international law," he wrote.

Historical Disputes

Pakistan has for years accused the Afghan Taliban of permitting the Pakistan Taliban to function from their land and battle against the Islamabad government in an effort to impose a rigid Islamic-led system of rule.

The Afghan Taliban government has always rejected this.
