Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the right to question certain calls from the official, mirroring the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
